Final Design from Task 3

Title: Moving forward

Fig 1.1 - Moving forward_Rachel Ng Jie Ting_Task 3

Rational

i) The decisions made in the design.

Characters running toward the ray of light to visually represent the idea of chasing hope and moving forward.

The clock and the gears in the background to symbolize forward moving time of life and the pressure of life, that further emphasized by the dark colour background.

ii) Meaning of the design

The design represents the idea of chasing hope and continuing to move forward in life despite challenges. The characters running toward the light symbolize determination.

iii) Design principles that are employed to create my design.

Contrast (colour): The quote uses a cyan colour to create strong contrast against the dark background. As the only blue-toned element in the design, it immediately draws attention.

Contrast (drawing style): Everything else in the world is a solid "fill" block (the gears, the clock, the bridge). By making the characters the only thing with an outline, I have created an immediate visual break. The viewers eye is naturally drawn to the "odd one out."

Movement: Leading lines created by the light guide the viewer’s eye toward the direction the characters are running.

Hierarchy: The visual hierarchy is structured as follows: (1) light (2) quote, bridge and main characters, (3) clock and gears. This layering helps create depth and directs the viewer’s attention through the composition.

Emphasis: Taking inspiration from the selected poster in task 1, The big clock in the background forms a radial pattern to create emphasis, directing attention toward the running main characters.

Reflections

What have I learnt in this module?

Throughout this module, I have learnt about design elements and design principles, and how they work together to create good designs and artworks. I can now understand how aspects such as balance, contrast, hierarchy, and composition influence the overall outcome of a design.

What did I enjoy the most?

I enjoyed doing task 1: choosing an artwork I liked. I get to browse and look at nice designs and artworks, and discover new artists to follow, I also enjoyed developing my sketches, this allowed me to improve my illustrator skills.

What did I not enjoy the most?

I disliked writing rationales, and moping over the fact I could have made other idea sketches, but it is too late, i need to get started on task 3 or I'm not gonna make it. This made it harder to move forward, as I was constantly comparing my chosen idea with other possibilities.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?

I need to have better time management, then i could have made better idea sketches.

After finishing task 2 and having Mr Fauzi to select the sketch to proceed with, I kept thinking about the hundreds of different ideas I could have done, but can never do due to skill issue and indecisiveness, as every new idea I think was better than the last :(

However, this experience made me more aware of my working habits and what I need to improve moving forward.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

I have learned to analyze designs and artworks in ways I haven't though before attending this module.

What are my aspirations?

I hope to improve my designing and drawing skill with the principle i have learned in this module.
