Task 3: Development & Design (40%)

Task 3 Recap

We are tasked to:

1. Select one of the 3 ideas I have proposed in task 2, develop and refine it through colour exploration, composition, typeface, positioning, etc., with design principles in mind.

2. Finalise the idea and give it a suitable title.

3. Create the final design in A4 size, JPEG format in at least 300dpi pixel size and upload the design and include a caption under it. The caption should be written as, Title of design_full name_Task 3.

4. Then we need to write a 200-word rationale explaining/ defending:

i) the decisions made in our design,

ii) the meaning/ purpose of the design and

iii) the design principles that are employed to create the design.

*Include the feedback that you received from your lecturer in the Task 3 blogpost.

Sketch development progress

11/3/2026 (Wednesday)

Fig 1.3 - Progress 1

  • Adjust composition (made the characters smaller, and repositioned them together with the bridge).
  • Decided on final character and environment drawing style (main character will use outline only, solid colour fill with no outline for the other elements (Bridge, clock)).
  • Changed clock colour.

13/3/2026 (Friday)

Fig 1.4 - Gear designs

  • Designed some gears to be used in the background.

Fig 1.5 - Progress 2

  • Changed the bridge design.
  • Refined and polished character design.
  • Adjusted artwork composition.
  • Removed lighting contrast and gradient.
  • Reduced the opacity on the clock to create the illusion of depth, that the clock is sitting further in the background.

15/3/2026  (Sunday)

Fig 1.6 - Progress 3

  • Adjusted colour of gears that sits behind the bridge to create depth.
  • Added back lighting contrast.

Fig 1.7 - Progress 4

  • In the process of redesigning the clock because I thought the previous one isn't good enough, and the colour didn't fit. Found some references on Pinterest to work with.

16/3/2026 (Monday)

Fig 1.8 - Progress 5

  • Completed clock design and arranged it in the artwork
  • Added extra gears at the bottom right and the top left of the artwork to balance the composition.

17/3/2026 (Tuesday)

Fig 1.9 - Progress 6

  • Added gradient in the background
  • Changed the colour of the gears: Lighter colour for the gears that is positioned behind the bridge (also to make the illusion of depth, just like the clock)

20/3/2026 (Friday)

Fig 1.10 - Progress 7

  • Added faint glow effects around characters
  • Added quote text.

Title: Moving forward

Rational

i) The decisions made in the design.

Characters running toward the ray of light to visually represent the idea of chasing hope and moving forward.

The clock and the gears in the background to symbolize forward moving time of life and the pressure of life, that further emphasized by the dark colour background.

ii) Meaning of the design

The design represents the idea of chasing hope and continuing to move forward in life despite challenges. The characters running toward the light symbolize determination.

iii) Design principles that are employed to create my design.

Contrast (colour): The quote uses a cyan colour to create strong contrast against the dark background. As the only blue-toned element in the design, it immediately draws attention.

Contrast (drawing style): Everything else in the world is a solid "fill" block (the gears, the clock, the bridge). By making the characters the only thing with an outline, I have created an immediate visual break. The viewers eye is naturally drawn to the "odd one out."

Movement: Leading lines created by the light guide the viewer’s eye toward the direction the characters are running.

Hierarchy: The visual hierarchy is structured as follows: (1) light (2) quote, bridge and main characters, (3) clock and gears. This layering helps create depth and directs the viewer’s attention through the composition.

Emphasis: Taking inspiration from the selected poster in task 1, The big clock in the background forms a radial pattern to create emphasis, directing attention toward the running main characters.
