Digital Photography and Imaging / Week 9

Week 9

Lecture 9 :

Realism vs Surrealism

1. Realism

Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality." It almost always takes a non-exotic and non-extraordinary subject matter and theme. There is no need to think outside of the box, as that is not "real."

2. Surrealism

A twist on Realism. It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality

Surrealism defies logic. Dreams and the workings of the subconscious mind inspire surrealistic art (French for "super-realism") filled with strange images and bizarre juxtapositions.

Fueled by the teachings of Freud and the rebellious work of Dada artists, surrealists like Salvador Dalí promoted free association and dream imagery. Salvador Dalí was a Spanish Surrealist painter and printmaker known for exploring subconscious imagery.

*Dadaism - An anti war art movement with art works that is  satirical and nonsensical in nature.

What is Digital Surrealism?

Surrealism is a cultural movement focused on type of arts to express about the artist’s idea themselves. In this digital era surrealism is one of the top digital art styles.

How to start creating Surrealism artworks?

a) Capturing your Dream

1. Sketch It Out

Take a piece of paper and pen/pencil or a tablet and start to sketch. Draw your vision out roughly. Don't finesse any details yet, but just lay out key points of your vision.

2. Find Reference Images

Gathering reference images will help you greatly in realizing your new idea. Gather images that directly relate to what you have in mind.

b) Mindset During Creation

1. "Does this look real?"

Surrealism is at its best when it's convincing enough that it could be real, however we obviously know that the subject matter you are creating is nonexistent, thus is not real.

2. Make it happen to the best of your ability.

When you try to approach something challenging, you will learn the skills you may need for next time to make it work. The worst thing you can do is be afraid and back off from your idea, because you would never learn that way.

Photoshop makes it easier than ever to create surrealist images, requiring just a modicum of photomontage skill to produce impressive results.

Part 2

Process screenshot in Adobe Photoshop

a) Choosing and selecting the cat in the picture.

After a photoshoot session with the subject of my poster (my cat), I chose a picture to use and started by cropping it to place in my poster.

b) Choosing and selecting the star in the picture.

Not just the cat, this star is also the core of my poster. Here I just repeated the same steps as above.

c) Applying glow effect to the star

d) Removing background lines around the cat

e) Text design on the bottom half of the poster

For the text on the bottom half of the poster, I used the font "Magical_Shiny_Script" and arranged it in front of the cat. Then, using the pencil tool again, I drew a line that wraps around the cat and star, also the line connects with the text. Some part of the line was erased to create the weaving effect.

Starry effect around the line was added after.

f) Adding glow effects

Here, I added the outer glow effects to the star in "DREAM", the line that travels along the text, and the stars around it.

g) Added a light source behind the cat

Using an oval I drew behind the cat and applying the gaussian blur effect, I added a light effect behind the cat as suggested by Mr. Fauzi.

h) Added bigger stars and applied glow effect to all stars

Mr Hafiz gave me feedback that the space between "DREAM" and the top of the cat looks a bit empty so I added some stars to that area.

Reflection :

This task was tough but fun. I get to express my ideas in this poster, but before that I ended up changing my ideas many times before I settled for this poster layout and design. I also learned that the Intertwined tool sometimes does not work properly and was the bane of my existence for the past weeks.

Using the brush tool in photoshop and erasing unwanted part was much easier.
