Week 4

Lecture 4 : Introduction to Photoshop 3 : Adjustment Layer & Filters

Adjustment Layer

What is Adjustment Layer?

Its is a group of a super useful, non-destructive image editing tools that add color and tonal adjustments to images without permanently changing its pixels. With the adjustment layers, one can edit and discard adjustments or restore the original image at any time.

Basic understanding of Adjustment Layer

When adding an adjustment layer to the image, a new layer will appear over the image and a Properties panel specific to the type of adjustment you’ve selected will pop up. The Properties panel will allow you to modify your adjustment layer, which in turn will modify your image.

1. BRIGHTNESS / CONTRAST

Brightness / Contrast makes adjustments to the tonal range of your image.

The brightness slider is for adjusting the highlights in your image and the Contrast slider is for adjusting the shadows in your image.

2. LEVEL

Levels modify the tonal values in an image by adjusting the levels of the shadows, midtones, and highlights.

3. CURVES

Curves let you adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of your image.

4. EXPOSURE

Exposure lets you adjust exposure levels with three sliders: Exposure, Offset and Gamma.

Exposure will adjust only the highlights of the image, Offset adjusts the mid tones and Gamma will adjust the dark tones only.

5. SELECTIVE COLOR

The Selective Color adjustment layer selectively modifies the amount of a primary color without modifying the other primary colors in your image.

Filters

What is Filter?

Using filters to edit photos is an essential element of Adobe’s graphics editor.

There are filters to change colour, add blur or create completely new image effects. Photoshop offers a virtually unlimited variety of filters for this purpose.

WEEK 3 - PEN TOOL EXERCISE (BEST COMPOSITION)

DESCRIPTION:

I have learned about layering

One of the advantages of using Layers is that since layers are different images stacked on top of each other,  I get to save a Photoshop file with all the layers included. Therefore, layers can be used for non-destructive editing. This means that any adjustments I do in Photoshop will never destroy the original image.

WEEK 4 (ADJUSTMENT LAYERS & FILTERS )

DESCRIPTION:

First, I learned how to apply an adjustment to a single layer in photoshop through a youtube video provided by my lecturer. Just right click the adjustment I placed on my image and click ‘create clipping mask’

After that, I learned how to use adjustments such as vibrance (to enhance the colours of the subjects I want to ‘Pop’ out and to dim the colour of subjects better situated for the background. Then, I learned to use selective colour to selectively modifiy the amount of green on the plant image in the background. I also used colour balancing to bring out the magenta and blue of the fish image.

Reflection : I have learned how to apply different adjustment on the selected picture, on a single layer.
